What is a man cave?
You’re probably wondering to yourself, “What is a man cave?” UrbanDictionary.com defines a man cave as “A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in a solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, and involve himself in certain hobbies, activities without interruption. This area is usually decorated by the male that uses it without interference from any female influence.”
If you’re like most men who only nest in their garage, do we have a surprise for you. Most man caves are just a room, like a basement per say, where a guy has the ultimate setup for Sunday night football or whatever his favorite sport may be. These so called man caves are just ‘man rooms’ in comparison to this beauty of an almost DIY man cave.
The Ultimate Man Cave
In the late 1990’s Bruce James and his cousin Greg Gibbons acquired an Atlas F Missile Silo along with the accompanying 225 acres of beautiful land somewhere in the Adirondack Mountains. What used to be a United States Government missile base was built into a stunning 2,000 square foot above ground home with an open floor plan, 28 windows allowing anyone to enjoy the jaw-dropping views of the Adirondacks, an exquisite fireplace and a wrap around covered porch.
As if building a home above such an interesting piece of Cold War era history wasn’t enough, the two men also decided to renovate the 2,300 square foot, two-level underground Launch Control Center (LCC). The former LCC is now the world’s most secure and just plain awesome man cave.

Inside the Man Cave
The entrance to the man cave is guarded by an electronic security keypad and metal gate along with two 1,000 pound blast doors; more than enough to keep the wife and kids away. Inside the two underground stories that make up this incredible man cave, one will find a full kitchen, dining area, entertainment center with satellite television access, two private suites, and exquisite marble baths with a Jacuzzi.
The silo tube (where the missile used to be) remains unconverted, but there is 12,000 square feet of potential man cave magic. This opens up endless possibilities for a DIY man cave: throw an underground poker tournament, build a giant closet for all of your suits, or start a bungee jumping resort. Whatever you choose to do with this man cave, just remember to have fun and relax in your one of a kind, reality altering underground bad-boy of a missile silo home.
The Silohome was featured in the July 2011 issue of Playboy Magazine and is currently on sale for $1.6 million.
